Mid-Century Modern Chair, in the style of Jean Royère, 1940s

A Croisillon-style Chair, designed between 1945 and 1950, attributed to French designer Jean Royère.

Jean Royère (1902-1981) was one of the undisputed leading figures of French twentieth-century decorative arts. Interpreting the culture of his time and the modernist trend, Royère used his sense of proportion, texture, material and color to make designs that turned what was common into something new and exciting in the post war period. His artistry eventually earned him a permanent place among the most famous designers of his generation, and his pieces survived in time to become timeless and relevant even today, very sought after by collectors.

This chair is from the Croisillon line, and it was made between 1945 and 1950. It preserves its original upholstery, and it’s in mostly fair condition.

Provenance: Private collection of New York interior designer Vicente Wolf, who personally acquired it at an antique shop in Paris in 1989.
