Product Description

An English walnut side chair circa 1880, inspired by the famous Chippendale design known as the “Ribband-Back”.

The design of this chair is taken directly from Thomas Chippendale’s 18th Century work ‘The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director’, plate XVII. The style “ribband-back” is termed for the scrolls that are carved to appear like interlacing ribbons, closely related to the French Rococo aesthetic.

The chair presents a foliate carved arched crest rail above a pierced interlaced splat, carved with ribbon suspending C-scrolls joining pierced foliate stiles. Small separations are present in the carving, but they do not compromise the structure or the stability of the back.

The seat has been reupholstered in leather at an unknown time.
