Mahogany Etagere by James Winter, London,19th C.

A superb Victorian étagère / dumbwaiter, circa 1830, from the shop of James Winter, London cabinetmaker.

James Winter was based in Soho, London, between 1823 and 1870. Throughout the Regency and Victorian period, James Winter’s pieces flourished with stunning new designs and beautifully crafted, restored furniture made of fine woods like mahogany and rosewood. This étagère, also known as a buffet or a serving trolley, is made of mahogany with Victorian columns and turned feet, plus a turned stretcher at the bottom. The piece is marked at the right side base with the company name “James Winter, Wardour St”, which places the piece in the early stage of Winter’s work, when his sons had not join the company.

42 inches wide, 47.5 inches tall and 18.5 inches deep.

Provenance: Personal collection of New York interior designer Vicente Wolf, who acquired the piece at a London antiques dealer in the year 1991, and has been at his NYC design studio ever since.
