A large cast bronze sculpture of a Buddha’s left hand. Indonesia, late 1980s.
The gesture is known as Dharmachakra Mudra, the traditional Buddhist gesture of teaching and discussion.
This sculpture reflects not only the complex and omnipresent Buddhist spirituality throughout Southeast Asia, but also the craftsmanship of its artisans and their superb metalwork skills, learned and carried on for generations since the 13th Century.
The sculpture rests freely on a superb rectangular stand in iron and wood, made specifically for the statue. It allows the sculpture to be separated from the stand, and be displayed on is own in a horizontal position if desired.
Cast bronze, hand-crafted and patinated in dark brown. The sculpture alone measures 12 inches long, 12 inches wide and 29 inches high (approximately). Mounted on its stand, it reaches a total height of 41 inches.Â
