Product Description
A vintage theater mask from Java, Indonesia, circa 1975-1980. Polychromed hand-carved teak, mounted on a black metal stand.
This type of mask is used at Indonesian “Topeng” or Mask theater dances, where traditional stories of nobles, kings, princes and warriors are performed by masked actors.
Each mask represents a character and the actor dances to tell its story through corporal expression.
The yellow masks usually represent noble warriors, with strong facial features, and the noses are thick and imposing. The eyes are elongated, and the mouths are small.
Mounted on a black metal stand measuring 4″ x 5.5″.
