A hand-carved stone pillar on a wood stand. Hunan, China, circa 16th Century.Â
Not unlike the smaller Scholar’s rocks, this stone pillar was placed in gardens as an object of meditation and contemplation of nature.
As a miniature representation of the gigantic stone pillars of Zhangjiajie, this pentagonal rock stands on a dark wood hexagonal base.
This base rests on a heptagonal structure to complete the stand.Â
60 inches total height.Â
